With the onset of winter, residents of Brent and Harrow are being reminded that antibiotics are not the solution for infections such as coughs, colds and sore throats. Dr Bharat Patel, Consultant Microbiologist at The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust, says: "Antibiotics are effective only against bacterial infections. Taking antibiotics for the wrong reasons has no benefit to the patient and can cause nasty side effects such as diarrhoea.

State Public Health Director, Illinois, Reminds Of Cough Etiquette And Respiratory Hygiene

As we enter flu season, and with reports of increased number of pertussis cases in some Illinois counties, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold is reminding people of the importance of vaccinations and preventive measures that should be used to avoid getting sick. Sleep Apnoea Frequently The Cause Of Long-Term Sick Leave And Even Loss Of Employment

People with sleep apnoea have an increased risk of needing to take long-term sick leave or give up working completely. So concludes a major Norwegian study on over 7,000 subjects, to be published in the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ), the scientific publication of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). This finding is especially alarming since sleep apnoea, although widespread, is little known not only to the public but also to many doctors.

Antenatal Infection Compromises Post-Natal Growth And Lung Development In The Premature Baby

Christèle Gras-Le Guen (Hôpital Mère Enfant CHU Nantes, France) and colleagues report an experimental work in the rabbit in order to confirm an association, previously reported in humans, between antenatal infection and post-natal bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), the most serious respiratory disease in premature babies. This study has been conducted in an experimental model of Escherichia coli antenatal infection in the rabbit.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Therapy Decreases Cardiovascular Risk

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep disorder characterised by snoring, repetitive apnoeas associated with oxygen desaturations, and sleep disruption. It has been estimated that 2-4% of the adult population in Western countries suffer from clinically significant OSAS. OSAS has also been associated with high blood pressure, stroke and myocardial ischaemia in epidemiological and observational studies.

Papworth Hospital Trial New ‘Airway Bypass’ For Emphysema Sufferers, England

Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce on World COPD Day (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) its participation in a trial of a new treatment for severe emphysema. Papworth is one of 45 hospitals in the world and only 2 in the UK participating in a worldwide trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the airway bypass procedure to relieve breathlessness in patients with advanced widespread 'homogeneous' emphysema.

Why Does It Take So Long For A Correct Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Hypertension?

Lack of awareness of pulmonary hypertension is one of the reasons why it takes on average up to two years for a correct diagnosis of this rare lung disease. This year's week-long campaign included a series of national fundraising and press events, organised by the national charity, Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK (www.phassociation.uk.com), and will culminate in the patient annual conference on 14 November.
