Childhood Asthma Linked To Lack Of Ancient Gut Bacteria

Researchers in the US have found that childhood asthma is significantly less likely in children infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium that has inhabited the stomach and small intestine of humans for thousands of years. They found that children between the ages of 3 and 13 were nearly 59 per cent less likely to have asthma if they carried the bug.

Low-Sodium Advice For Asthmatics Should Be Taken With A Grain Of Salt

Following a low-sodium diet does not appear to have any appreciable impact of asthma control as once thought, according to new research. "Despite the clear benefit of a low-sodium diet on cardiovascular risk factors, there is no therapeutic benefit in the use of a low-sodium diet…on asthma control in our study population," wrote Zara E. K. Pogson, M.R.C.P., clinical research fellow at the University of Nottingham in England.

Genetic Samples Of Ancient Bones May Help Israeli-Palestinian-German Team Combat Tuberculosis

Six-thousand year old bones excavated in Jericho may help a joint Israeli-Palestinian-German research group combat tuberculosis. According to Prof. Mark Spigelman of the Kuvin Center for the Study of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who is leading the Israeli team, the bones, which were all excavated by Dr. Kathleen Kenyon between fifty and seventy years ago, will be tested for tuberculosis, leprosy, leishmania and malaria.

Theravance, Inc. (NASDAQ: THRX) announced the positive results from a Phase 2 study of the lead investigational compound GSK961081 ('081) in the inhaled bifunctional muscarinic antagonist-beta2 agonist (MABA) program. The MABA program was licensed to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in 2005 under the terms of the companies' Strategic Alliance Agreement as a potential treatment for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
