New Drug To Curb Smoking Shows Positive Results

Research has shown that varenicline tartrate - a novel new drug specifically developed for smoking cessation - allows smokers to abstain from cigarettes significantly longer and more effectively than smokers using a placebo. A paper in Respirology, published by Wiley-Blackwell, compared the efficacy of a standard 12-week regimen of varenicline for smoking cessation with a placebo on 333 subjects in 15 test sites across China, Singapore and Thailand.

Orexo Announces Phase IIa Data On OX914 In Rhinitis

Orexo (STO:ORX) reported clinical results from an experimental phase IIa safety and efficacy study in allergic rhinitis with OX914, the first compound in its Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor program. This program is intended to produce therapeutic molecules for the treatment of inflammatory airway diseases including rhinitis, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ("COPD").

Gene Variants May Determine Lung Function And Susceptibility To Maternal Smoking

A tiny variation within a single gene can determine not only how quickly and well lungs grow and function in children and adolescents, but how susceptible those children will be to exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke, even in utero, according to researchers from the University of Southern California. "Many factors can affect lung function and growth, including genetic variation and environmental exposures such as tobacco smoke and air pollutants," said Carrie Breton, Sc.D.

American Lung Association Provides Health Tips To Alaska Residents Living In Areas Affected By Ash Fall From The Mount Redoubt Volcano

Residents in the path of Mount Redoubt's recent surge of volcanic activity should take steps to protect themselves and their families from the ash, gases and debris. The American Lung Association warns that people most at risk include children and teens, seniors, people with lung diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular diseases and diabetics. Healthy adults exercising or working outdoors also face increased risk.

Respiratory Risk From Hospital Cleaning Fluids
