‘Rescue Course’ Of Antenatal Steroids Improves Outcome In Premature Babies

In a study presented at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's (SMFM) annual meeting, researchers unveiled findings that show that premature babies born before 34 weeks have a 31 percent reduction in serious complications when given a "rescue course" of Antenatal Corticosteroids (ACS) steroids with no adverse side effects noted. "Premature babies are very susceptible to respiratory problems which may lead to additional severe complications," said Dr. James Kurtzman, M.D.

Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center January 28, 2009 Evening Update - All Are Doing Well!

Kaiser Permanente announced yesterday evening that mom and the octuplets continue to do well. Kaiser Permanente's Bellflower Medical Center also reports that five of the babies are now breathing room air, while three are getting oxygen through a tube in their nose. It is anticipated that soon all babies will be off assisted oxygen. Of the eight babies, four currently are being tube-fed donated breast milk, one less than earlier reported.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to take Venom HYPERDRIVE 3.0, a product sold as a dietary supplement and containing sibutramine. Sibutramine, a controlled substance with risks for abuse or addiction, is a potent drug that poses potential safety risks. "Sibutramine is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved prescription drug used as an appetite suppressant for weight loss," said Janet Woodcock, M.D.

Pain Relieving Effects Of Acupuncture Are Limited

The pain relieving effects of acupuncture compared with placebo are small and seem to lack clinical relevance, according to a study published on bmj.com today. Researchers at the Nordic Cochrane Centre in Copenhagen analysed evidence from thirteen acupuncture pain trials involving over 3,000 patients.
