Hawaii Public School Students Report Smoking Less

Lt. Governor James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr. and the Hawai'i State Department of Health (DOH) Tobacco Prevention and Control Program today released a study that shows fewer youth identifying themselves as smokers. The Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) also found fewer youth experimenting with cigarettes as well as being exposed to second-hand smoke. "I'm very proud that more of our Hawai'i youth are making the right decision not to smoke," said Lt. Governor Aiona.

Arkansas Department Of Health Sets New Record For Mass Dispensing Flu Exercise

The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) set a new record for its Mass Dispensing Flu Exercise and immunized 123,172 Arkansans against influenza last week. The shots were dispensed during the mass flu vaccination clinics held statewide in 81 health units. All 75 counties were involved again this year, but the totals significantly surpassed last year's number of 103,541 vaccinations for the exercise. Dr.

Women Smokers’ Longevity Cut By 14.5 Years Because Of Smoking

One in every five adult women in the United States still smokes, even though smoking takes an average of 14.5 years off their lives, says the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). ACOG said that approximately 438,000 men and women in the USA die prematurely as a result of smoking directly or passively - add to this total about 8.6 million people who have developed serious, preventable illnesses as a result of smoking.

Inhaled Corticosteroids Raise Pneumonia Risk For Lung Disease Sufferers

Lung disease experts at Johns Hopkins are calling for physicians to show much greater caution in prescribing inhaled corticosteroid drugs for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease after finding evidence that the widely used anti-inflammatory medications increase the risk of pneumonia by a full third.

Dr Bharat Patel, Consultant Microbiologist at The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust, says: "Antibiotics are effective only against bacterial infections. Taking antibiotics for the wrong reasons has no benefit to the patient and can cause nasty side effects such as diarrhoea.
