Actor Paul Newman Dies Of Lung Cancer, Aged 83

Paul Newman has died of lung cancer at the age of 83. Newman, who used to be a heavy smoker until 30 years ago, had been receiving treatment for lung cancer when he was last seen a few months ago in a wheelchair coming out of the Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York. Newman's early film career was during a period when cigarette smoking in movies portrayed virility, sex appeal and sophistication. He once said he was amazed he had survived all that booze, smoking and car racing.

NICE Reviews Guidance On The Prevention Of ‘Flu’

Shocking Pictures To Appear On Cigarette Packets In UK On 1st October

The UK's ten million Smokers may see pictures of rotting teeth, throat cancer, and indications of male impotence (erectile dysfunction) on cigarette packets they buy at the beginning of October. The Department of Health (DoH) says "The warnings illustrate the devastating effects that tobacco can have on health." Written warnings were introduced in January 2003. The DoH says they have been a great success.

Established Safety Profile Of Spiriva Confirmed By 30 Rigorously Controlled Clinical Trials And The Landmark Trial UPLIFT

Boehringer Ingelheim and Pfizer Inc have released a new analysis of 30 rigorously controlled clinical trials, including UPLIFT, confirming the long term safety profile of Spiriva(R) HandiHaler(R) (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder). The new and expanded safety data contradicts the conclusions about tiotropium in an article by Singh et al. published in the September 24th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Study Of ‘Big Eaters’ Could Lead To Better Asthma Treatments

A new study into the role of a particular immune cell in the lungs could lead to better treatments for the 5 million people in the UK affected by asthma. Scientists from the University of Southampton's School of Medicine will study the role of macrophages (literally 'big-eaters' in Greek) in the lungs of people with asthma and examine how they affect the airway narrowing that can worsen asthma symptoms.

Paracetamol Use Increases Risk Of Asthma, Rhinoconjunctivitis, And Eczema In Children

Paracetamol, also called acetaminophen use in the first year of life or in early childhood has been associated with an increased risk of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis (RC), and eczema between the ages of 6 and 7 years, according to an article released on September 19, 2008 in The Lancet. Many hypotheses have been made about the cause of asthma, the common chronic respiratory condition which involves repeated inflammation and constriction of the airways.
