Second-Hand Smoke May Trigger Nicotine Dependence Symptoms In Kids

Parents who smoke cigarettes around their kids in cars and homes beware - second-hand smoke may trigger symptoms of nicotine dependence in children. The findings are published in the September edition of the journal Addictive Behaviors in a joint study from nine Canadian institutions.

Supplements No Better Than Placebo In Slowing Cartilage Loss In Knees Of Osteoarthritis Patients

In a two-year multicenter study led by University of Utah doctors, the dietary supplements glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate performed no better than placebo in slowing the rate of cartilage loss in the knees of osteoarthritis patients. This was an ancillary study concurrently conducted on a subset of the patients who were enrolled in the prospective, randomized GAIT (Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial).

DSHS Texas Receives CDC Pandemic Flu Grant

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is one of 29 state and local health departments awarded funding by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for pandemic influenza preparedness projects. Rhinitis Linked To Adult-Onset Asthma

Adult-onset asthma can be predicted by the presence of rhinitis, both allergic and non-allergic, according to an article released on September 19, 2008 in The Lancet. To investigate the potential implications of both allergic and non-allergic rhinitis on adult-onset asthma, Rafea Shaaban, Mahmoud Zureik, and Benedicte Leynaert, of the INSERM Epidemiology Team, Paris, France, and colleagues, examined data from the European Community Health Survey.

American Lung Association Cautions Against Wood-burning And Urges Cleaner Alternatives For Winter Heat

As cooler temperatures begin to mark the beginning of fall, the American Lung Association warns that the comfort of a roaring fire can be harmful to your health and have a negative impact on both indoor and outdoor air quality. Burning wood emits harmful toxins and fine particles in the air that can worsen breathing problems and lead to heart and lung disease and even early death.

A Breath Of Fresh Air: New National Guideline Will Provide Clarity On Emergency Oxygen Use In Adults, UK

The first national guideline for the emergency use of oxygen in adults has been published, with the aim of simplifying oxygen delivery and better protecting acutely ill patients. Developed by a working party and led by the British Thoracic Society (BTS), the guideline is published in the October 2008 issue of Thorax1, the journal of the BTS, and is supported by 22 professional societies and institutions.

Immunize El Paso To Provide Flu Shots For Young And Old All Across Borderland, USA

Influenza vaccination is now recommended for all children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday. The recommendation to vaccinate children 6 months up to their 5th birthday has been in place since 2006. These children should all be vaccinated annually. Children and adolescents at higher risk for influenza complications should continue to be a focus of vaccination efforts as Immunize El Paso transitions to routinely vaccinating all children and adolescents.

British Lung Foundation Welcomes Images On Cigarette Packets

'These images are a stark reminder that we can't treat our lungs as if they were hoover bags able to filter out harmful substances like cigarette smoke' says Dame Helena Shovelton, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation. 'Smoking causes disabling lung diseases like COPD and kills more than 120,000 people in the UK each year. We hope these images will underline that more effectively than written messages.
