Replidyne Discontinues Phase III Trial

Replidyne, Inc. (Nasdaq: RDYN) announced that it has discontinued enrollment in a placebo-controlled Phase III clinical trial testing faropenem medoxomil (faropenem) in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB). Replidyne took this action to conserve its cash assets and support initiatives that include pursuing strategic transactions and maintaining its research programs.

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (NYSE: WYE), announced that it is withdrawing its application for an extension to the European Marketing Authorization for TYGACIL(R) (tigecycline). This extension sought approval of TYGACIL for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

Some HIV-Positive People In Zambia Stopping Antiretroviral Treatment For Alternative Drugs, Health Official Says

Zambia's Health Deputy Minister Lwipa Puma recently said that some HIV-positive people in the country are dying from AIDS-related causes after they stop taking antiretroviral drugs in favor of other treatments that some people claim can cure the virus, the Times of Zambia/AllAfrica.com reports.

InterMune Announces Progress On Pirfenidone In IPF

InterMune, Inc. (Nasdaq: ITMN) announced that it will initiate an open-label roll-over study to evaluate the long-term safety of pirfenidone in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The roll-over study will be open to patients who complete one of the two concurrent Phase 3 CAPACITY studies of pirfenidone in IPF. InterMune expects that the first patient will enter the roll-over study in August 2008.

Identification Of The Common Mechanism Underlying Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome May Lead To New Strategies Against Bird Flu

The Spanish flu outbreak of 1918 killed between 30 and 50 million people. In the infected patients, the ultimate cause of death was acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This fatal condition is a massive reaction of the body during which the lung becomes severely damaged. ARDS can be induced by various bacterial and viral infections, but also by chemical agents. These could be toxic gases that are inhaled or gastric acid when aspirated.

Inhibiting Stress Oxidant May Be New Therapy For COPD

A study in Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology published by Wiley-Blackwell has showed that the generation of oxidative stress increases pulmonary inflammation - thus encouraging the development of airway obstruction associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
