Using HEPA Filters May Improve Cardiovascular Health

One day doctors may recommend using high efficiency particle air (HEPA) filters along with weight loss, smoking cessation, and exercise to improve cardiovascular health, according to researchers in Denmark. In a recent study, they found that using HEPA filters for just two days significantly improved a key measure of cardiovascular health in healthy, non-smoking elderly individuals.

Blacks Awaiting Lung Transplants More Likely To Die Or Be Denied Than Whites

Blacks with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were less likely to receive a lung transplant and more likely to die or be removed from the transplant list than whites, according to Columbia University Medical Center researchers.

New Australian Blood Test Proven Six Times More Effective For Tuberculosis Control

In a landmark study electronically published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, a blood test for detecting tuberculosis infection, QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT), has been shown to be six times more accurate than the conventional tuberculin skin test (TST) at predicting which tuberculosis (TB)-exposed individuals will go on to develop TB disease.

Traffic pollution is a major source of air pollutants and two thirds of people with asthma tell us that fumes from traffic aggravate their condition.

Childhood Respiratory Disease Linked To Similar Adulthood Illnesses

A new study published in the journal Thorax reportsthat respiratory disease during early childhood - such as bronchitis,pneumonia, and asthma - increases the risk of illness andpremature death in adulthood.Researchers followed 9,554 males who attended Glasgow Universitybetween 1948 and 1968 andagreed to be part of a long term study to track their health.

In the February 13 issue of JAMA, severalstrategies were explored for patients with severe respiratorydisorders. While there was little improvement in death rates, severalpromising results were obtained, and the resulting dialogue indicates aneed for further research in the same vein.

Clean Air For Kids Campaign Scores A Win, Canada

The Lung Association praised the B.C. government for being the second province in Canada to announce that it will introduce legislation to ban smoking in cars where children are present. This marks the first "win" since the Association launched its national campaign to end smoking in cars with kids.
