New Website Provides Vital Information On Looking After School Children With Medical Conditions, UK

A new website, http://www.medicalconditionsatschool.org.uk, is being launched at the Education Show by Asthma UK, The Anaphylaxis Campaign, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Diabetes UK, Epilepsy Action and the Long-Term Conditions Alliance, to provide vital resources that will help schools create a safe environment for children living with a medical condition.

HSE Launches “Asbestos The Hidden Killer” Web Video, UK

Every year 4000 people die of asbestos which is more than those in road traffic accidents. In Great Britain we are in the middle of an epidemic and it is expected that asbestos deaths will to peak to nearly 5000 which is a legacy from years gone by.

U.S. Department Of Veteran Affairs Approves NCCAOM Certification Examinations For Veterans’ Reimbursement

The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) received official approval from the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs declaring that U.S. veterans can receive reimbursement for the costs of the NCCAOM certification examinations. The examinations that qualify for reimbursement are the Acupuncture and Point Location Module, the Foundations of Oriental Medicine Module (FOMM), the Biomedicine Module and the Chinese Herbology Module.

New Survey Finds Highest Rates Of Drug-Resistant TB To Date

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has been recorded at the highest rates ever, according to a new report published recently. The report presents findings from the largest survey to date on the scale of drug resistance in tuberculosis. The report, "Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in the world", is based on data collected between 2002 and 2006 on 90 000 TB patients in 81 countries.

GlaxoSmithKline And Theravance Announce Expansion Of The Horizon Programme With Start Of Large Phase 2B Study Of LABA In COPD Patients

GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) and Theravance, Inc. (NASDAQ: THRX) announced the expansion of the Horizon programme into development of a next-generation combination treatment for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). A large Phase 2b COPD dose-optimisation study with the lead long-acting beta agonist (LABA) GW642444 ('444) has commenced, with screening of the first patient undertaken.

Investigating Link Between Fungal Proteins, Innate Immunity And Asthma

Researchers at Mayo Clinic and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) have received a second grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to advance understanding of the role of environmental fungi in chronic airway disorders. Recently NIAID awarded the researchers a further $1.8 million for these studies over a five-year period to investigate how the environmental fungus Alternaria triggers airway inflammation and bronchial asthma.

Social Impact Of Asthma Needs Treating Too, Warns Study, UK

Children suffering from asthma should be treated holistically to improve the quality of their everyday lives and school attendance rates, according to a University of Salford academic.Lecturer and former nurse, Karen Iley from the University's School of Nursing believes social factors surrounding asthma sufferers should be taken into account when treating the illness - as well as their medical symptoms.

Statement On Citizens Advice Press Release ‘Prescription Costs Are Barrier To Health’, UK

Neil Churchill, Chief Executive of Asthma UK, says: 'People with asthma have consistently told us this is one of the most important issues they want the Government to address and yet the Government has delayed its proposed consultation on reform since Autumn 2007. 'Almost 1.8 million people with asthma currently pay for their prescriptions in England, yet nearly half tell us they find it a struggle to afford them and have to regularly make the decision to not take their medicines.

Asthma No Penalty To Sporting Goals, UK

Asthma UK Scotland has said the case of Scottish Rugby internationalist, Scott MacLeod, highlights that having asthma does not need to curtail sporting ambitions. MacLeod, the 16-times-capped forward, has been cleared by an independent judicial committee to continue to play the game after he was found to have inadvertently taken a prohibited asthma medication without the required permission.

Cockroaches Are A Major Health Concern In Schools And At Home

Cockroaches spread nearly 33 different kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. As cockroaches crawl through decaying matter or sewage, they turn into disease-carrying pests by picking up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) also warns that cockroach allergens can trigger asthma attacks, with an increased incidence in children.
