Secondhand Smoke Exposure Worsens Cystic Fibrosis

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have discovered the first genetic evidence that secondhand smoke can worsen lung disease. The report in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association describes one gene variation that can weaken lung function as well as shorten the lifespan of those affected by cystic fibrosis and also are exposed to secondhand smoke.

Inverseon Announces Positive Phase IIa Asthma Study

In the article by Hanania et al., in Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, vol. 21, (2008), pp. 134-141, entitled, "The safety and effects of the beta-blocker, nadolol, in mild asthma: An open-label pilot study," mild asthmatics were treated for 9 weeks. All subjects tolerated the drug, and 8 of 10 subjects experienced a clinically meaningful, dose-related, reduction in airway hyper-responsiveness.

Snoring Affects Development Of Chronic Brochitis, Study

A study by researchers in South Korea found that snoring influenced the development of chronic bronchitis, but how and why remained somewhat of a mystery.The research was carried out by scientists at Korea University Ansan Hospital, in Ansan, South Korea, and is published in the 28th January issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

More Than A Matter Of Degree: Severe Asthma May Be A Different Form Of The Disease

A multi-center research project to investigate severe asthma has found a key physiological difference between severe and non-severe forms of the disease, a finding that could help explain why those with severe asthma do not respond well to treatment. The study from the Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP) has found that those with severe asthma are much more likely to show signs of "air trapping" in the lungs, a condition that prevents a full exhalation.

Researchers At Peoria Pulmonary Associates To Study Airway Bypass Procedure For Emphysema

Researchers at Peoria Pulmonary Associates announced the start of the EASE (Exhale Airway Stents for Emphysema) Trial, an international, multi-center clinical trial to explore an investigational procedure for advanced widespread emphysema/COPD. Conducted at Methodist Medical Center, the study focuses on a procedure called airway bypass.
