Dr Victoria King, Research Development Manager at Asthma UK, says: 'Research is beginning to show a link between menopause and asthma however it is too early to say exactly how menopause affects asthma symptoms and who is likely to be affected. 'What is interesting about this study is that it supports previous findings which show that the effect the menopause may have on lung function is greater in lean women that have a lower body mass index. Swedish Rhodiola Rosea Extract Effective In Treating Mild To Moderate Depression In New Clinical Trial

A new clinical trial has found that an extract of Rhodiola rosea roots and rhizomes demonstrated anti-depressive activity in patients with mild to moderate depression. This is the first double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of Rhodiola rosea in patients diagnosed with depression. Patients given the Swedish-made Rhodiola rosea extract showed significant improvements in depression compared to those given placebo. [click link for full article]

Pulmonary Heart Disease Hospitalizations Increase By More Than Half

Hospital admissions for people with chronic pulmonary heart disease rose from 301,400 to 456,500 stays between 1997 and 2005 - an increase of more than 50 percent - according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Pulmonary heart disease is a serious, often deadly lung blood vessel disorder that can cause shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, dizzy spells and fainting. Dolphin ‘Therapy’ A Dangerous Fad, Emory Researchers Warn

Vitamin B12 Function May Be Diminished By Excessive Folate

In a study of adults aged 20 and over, researchers at Tufts University showed that homocysteine and methylmalonic acid are at much higher levels in individuals who have a combination of vitamin B12 deficiency and high blood folate levels than in individuals who are also vitamin B12 deficient but have normal folate levels.Homocysteine and methylmalonic acid, compounds used by enzymes that contain vitamin B12, accumulate in the blood in patients who are vitamin B12 deficient. Improved Outcome Of Experimental Lung Transplantation

Lung transplantation is the only life-saving therapy for an increasing number of patients suffering from end-stage lung disease. However, in comparison to kidneys, the outcome of lung transplantation is poor. This is mainly due to the very delicate structure of the lung, whose function critically depends on a very thin barrier between air and blood.
