CDC Tries To Find Those Who Were Near TB Infected Women On Flight 293

On December 13th a woman who was sick with TB (tuberculosis) flew on American Airlines Flight 293 from New Delhi, India, to Chicago, USA. She then took another plane from Chicago to San Francisco. The infected woman is from Nepal and now lives in Sunnyvale, California. Those sitting next or near to her did not know she was infected and posed a danger to their health. The woman had been diagnosed with drug-resistant tuberculosis in India. [click link for full article]

Publication Of The INSPIRE Study Results

Treatment guidelines recommend tiotropium as a first line maintenance treatment for patients with all severities of COPD. Inhaled corticosteroids are recommended for patients with severe or very severe COPD and a history of repeated exacerbations. [click link for full article]

New Therapy Reduces Mortality In Patients With Severe COPD

Patients with severe COPD may benefit more from therapy that combines salmeterol and fluticasone [SFC] than treatment with tiotropium, according to results from a long-term, multi-center study, "Investigating New Standards for Prophylaxis in Reducing Exacerbations" (INSPIRE) that directly compared the two therapies. Handling Pesticides Associated With Greater Asthma Risk In Farm Women

New research on farm women has shown that contact with some commonly used pesticides in farm work may increase their risk of allergic asthma. "Farm women are an understudied occupational group," said Jane Hoppin, Sc.D., of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and lead author of the study. COPD Patient Benefits From Treatment With Seretide

The INSPIRE (Investigating New Standards for Prophylaxis In Reduction of Exacerbations) trial demonstrated that while the two study medications; Seretide™ 50/500µgDiskus™ (salmeterol/fluticasone propionate) and tiotropium bromide 18µg Handihaler® had a comparable effect on exacerbation rates, those who received Seretide experienced substantial health status improvements and better survival periods than those who received tiotropium. Translational Research Patented First Experimental Treatment Against Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a disease with unknown cause with a very severe prognosis; when detected, it is already in an advanced stage. Patients suffering from it cannot develop with normality pulmonary gas exchange, and have a very reduced quality of life. Because of lack of an effective treatment, they rarely survive 5 years after being diagnosed. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis affects 13 out of 100,000 men and 7 out of 100,000 women, normally over 40 years of age. [click link for full article]

Boots the chemist is warning that Britain is in the grip of a cold snap, but rather than indicating the onset of a traditional white Christmas, Boots are cautioning that Brits are facing the worst spell of colds and flu to hit the country this year.
