AstraZeneca has announced that SYMBICORT® (budesonide/formoterol fumarate dihydrate) pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) is now available in the United States for the long-term maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 12 years of age and older.Administered twice daily, SYMBICORT is a combination of two proven asthma medications - budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), and formoterol, a rapid and long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA). Recovery From Pneumonia After Ozone Exposure May Be Affected By Gender

Does air pollution have a bigger effect on the immune system of females than males? It did among mice exposed to ozone -- a major component in air pollution that is known to negatively affect lung function -- and then infected with pneumonia, as significantly more females died from the infection than males.It is known that some immune functions differ in males and females, in humans as well as in rodents. Stroke is a leading cause of hospital admission among older adults. Yet more hospital readmissions after stroke are for pneumonia or for heart disease than for another stroke, according to a study published in the June 2007 issue of the journal Stroke. Papworth Breathing Technique Cuts Asthma Symptoms By A Third

A sequence of breathing and relaxation exercises known as the Papworth method has been shown to reduce asthma symptoms by a third by the first randomised controlled trial to investigate the technique, which is published online ahead of print in Thorax. Eighty five people with mild asthma were randomly assigned to receive either five sessions of treatment by the Papworth method on top of their medical care or to continue to rely on usual drug therapy. AMA To Support Increased Resources For TB Control

The AMA today voted to support federal legislation to increase resources for global and domestic tuberculosis (TB) control. "About one-third of the world's population is infected with tuberculosis, and drug resistant strains of TB are spreading around the world," said J. James Rohack, M.D., AMA board member.
