Children suffering from pneumonia could be spared the pain of the doctor's needle, thanks to new research funded by the British Lung Foundation.The study, a world-first carried out by researchers at The University of Nottingham, discovered that children given oral treatment recovered as quickly, suffered less pain, required less oxygen therapy in hospital and were able to go home sooner than those given injections. About 3 of every 10 children and teens who are admitted to the hospital from the emergency room have asthma, pneumonia, acute bronchitis or another respiratory disorder, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Asthma alone accounted for more than one-third of respiratory admissions - 95,000 cases - through the emergency room in 2004. [click link for full article]

People who have a reduced lung capacity may have a greater risk of heart attack and stroke because they show evidence of inflammation, reveals a study published online ahead of print in Thorax. This association is not related to smoking, respiratory diseases or obesity. The New Zealand researchers took measurements of lung capacity and inflammation in 1,000 adults aged between 26 and 32 years. [click link for full article]

Intensive-Care Patients With Alcohol Problems Are More Likely To Require Mechanical Ventilation

More than 300,000 patients receive mechanical ventilation during intensive care per year in the United States, even though the hospital mortality rate for ventilated patients can approach 50 percent. New findings indicate that medical patients with an alcohol-use disorder (AUD) are more likely to require mechanical ventilation, and/or need it for a longer period of time.Results are published in the July issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. Smoking Ban In Enclosed Public Places In England From July 1

If you want to have a cigarette in England after July 1, make sure it is not in an enclosed public place - otherwise you will be breaking the law. As of July 1, it will be illegal to smoke in enclosed public places - offices, pubs, bars, factories and public buildings. You can still smoke outdoors and in your home. This new law is aimed at protecting the health of the non-smoker, who allegedly risks his/her health by breathing secondhand smoke (passive smoking). [click link for full article]
