Scientists hoping to find new treatments for one of the world's most deadly infectious diseases say drugs used to treat common fungal infections may provide the answer.Tuberculosis, or TB, is a highly contagious disease of the lungs that was thought to have been virtually eliminated by the 1960s, but is now resurgent and kills nearly two million people worldwide every year. Middle-Aged Adults Most Likely To Use Complementary Medicine

Even though older adults generally have poorer health, middle aged adults are most likely to turn to complementary and alternative medicine, a new study shows. Viagra Drug May Help Improve Exercise Capacity In Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients, UCLA Study Reports

UCLA researchers have found that Viagra may help patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable disease characterized by progressive scarring in the lungs, which often leads to a lung transplant.Published in the March issue of the journal Chest, the research shows that more than half of the patients treated with Viagra, also known medically as Sildenafil, improved their walking distance by at least 20 percent during a standard test to measure lung function. Tobacco Toxicants Significantly Higher In African Americans

New research suggests that a child's race may be a factor in determining his/her susceptibility to tobacco toxins associated with environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). The study, published in the March issue of CHEST, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), reveals that African American children with asthma, who are exposed to ETS, have significantly higher toxin levels when compared to their Caucasian counterparts. Bronchodilators Show No Benefit In Bronchoscopy Patients

A new study suggests that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), who are undergoing bronchoscopy, should not be premedicated with bronchodilators. Researchers from the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, gathered 120 patients with COPD and randomized them into three groups to receive salbutamol, placebo, or nothing prior to bronchoscopy.
