Obesity Shows Stronger Asthma Risk In Non-allergic Women

A new study shows that obese, non-allergic women are at a greater asthma risk than their male-counterparts. Researchers from the University of Ottawa administered a survey to over 85,000 Canadians that included questions about self-reported asthma, allergy history, height, and weight. After controlling for covariates, results showed that obese women had an 85 percent increase in the risk of asthma, compared with women at a normal weight. [click link for full article]

Death In Patients With COPD Reduced By Inhaled Corticosteroids

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who use inhaled corticosteroids may have a significantly decreased mortality risk, according to a new study published in the September issue of CHEST, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). New research shows that patients who received inhaled corticosteroids within 30 days of hospital discharge had a 25 percent reduced all-cause mortality rate. [click link for full article]

Noncancerous Abnormalities On Chest Radiographs May Prove Harmful

Common chest radiograph abnormalities generally not suspicious for lung cancer may actually be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer and/or mortality, according to a new study. Researchers from the National Institutes of Health followed 70,000 subjects from November 1993 to July 2001, who were enrolled in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. Budesonide/formoterol More Cost Effective Than Salmeterol/fluticasone In Severe COPD

New health economic data presented today at the European Respiratory Society 2006 Annual Congress (ERS) add to a growing body of evidence demonstrating a further benefit of budesonide/formoterol in COPD. An analysis of switching patients from LABA-therapy to ICS/LABA combination therapy showed that when compared with the respective LABA, budesonide/formoterol (Symbicort®) is more cost-effective than salmeterol/fluticasone (Seretide™) in the treatment of severe COPD1. Fragrance Chemical Useful In Treating Head Lice Problems

Poseidon scientists discovered that the menthol derivative, menthol propyleneglycol carbonate, is useful in eliminating lice in hair. Cases of head lice, particularly in children, are in the upswing in many countries. This is again worrisome for public health and school officials now that the children are back at school. It takes only one infected child to re-infect the entire class. [click link for full article]

Effective Test To Determine Treatment For Chronic Cough Found By Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic researchers have found that an asthma diagnostic test, the exhaled nitric oxide test, is an inexpensive, quick and easy way to determine whether inhaled corticosteroids will relieve a patient's chronic cough. Details will be presented in an abstract at the European Respiratory Society Meeting in Munich, Germany, Sept. 6."We're thinking this could be a significant development in the field of chronic cough," says Peter Hahn, M.D. [click link for full article]

Budesonide/Formoterol Maintenance And Reliever Therapy Reduces Asthma Exacerbations

New data published today at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress show that a new treatment approach for asthma, budesonide/formoterol Maintenance And Reliever Therapy (Symbicort SMART™), is more effective than fixed doses of either budesonide/formoterol or salmeterol/fluticasone (Seretide™) plus reliever medication in reducing all forms of exacerbations. GPs Show Improved Confidence In Managing COPD Patients, UK

Over 75% of GPs are more confident in managing COPD now than they were two years ago, potentially due to NICE guidelines and the QOF.
