EMEA Public Statement On Herbal Medicinal Products Containing Cimicifugae Racemosae Rhizoma (Black Cohosh, Root)

The European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and the Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) have been made aware of a number of case reports of hepatotoxicity (liver injuries) in patients using Cimicifugae racemosae rhizoma (Black Cohosh, root). Following review of all available data, the HMPC considered that there is a potential connection between herbal medicinal products containing Cimicifugae racemosae rhizoma (Black Cohosh, root) and hepatotoxicity. Link Between Indoor Chlorinated Swimming Pools And Childhood Asthmas In Europe

The prevalence of childhood asthma and wheeze rises around 2 to 3 per cent for every indoor swimming pool per 100,000 of the population across Europe, indicates research published ahead of print in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.The researchers analysed the rates of wheezing, asthma, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and atopic eczema, reported in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), by video or written questionnaire. Lung Lining Infection In Children, Less Expensive Treatment Found

After testing the two most common treatments for empyema in children and seeing equal clinical results, researchers concluded that the enzyme urokinase should be the primary treatment against infection in the lung lining because it costs 25 percent less than the other procedure, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Childhood Asthma And Indoor Swimming Pools

A Belgian study has found that children who swim in indoor swimming pools have a raised risk of wheezing and asthma. The researchers found that for each extra swimming pool per 100,000 people, asthma rates in an area go up by two to three percent. The study was carried out by scientists at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. It is thought that this could be due to chlorine build-up in indoor pools, which don't have the ventilation of outdoor pools. [click link for full article]
