Children May Be More Affected By Second-Hand Smoke Than Adults

A study presented at this year's Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists provides evidence that the carbon monoxide levels of children exposed to second-hand smoke are often similar to that of active adult smokers and frequently higher than levels in adults exposed to second-hand smoke. 5% Of Hospital Admissions Among Adults Aged 35 And Over Are Due To Smoking, New Figures Reveal, UK

One in 20 English hospital admissions for those aged 35 and over in 2006/7 were attributable to smoking, a report by The NHS Information Centre shows today. Figures included for the first time in the annual report, Statistics on Smoking, England, show there were an estimated 445,100 admissions for such diseases, including: -- 163,200 admissions with a primary diagnosis of cancer. -- 139,600 admissions with a primary diagnosis of circulatory diseases.

British Lung Foundation Supports Beyond Smoking Kills Report

British Lung Foundation supports the publication of the Beyond Smoking Kills report being launched by Action on Smoking & Health (ASH). "Two thirds of people with smoking-related lung disease tell us there should be a ban on cigarette vending machines in future and the same number say they want to see cigarettes removed from display in supermarkets" says Jill Morrell, Head of Public Affairs at the British Lung Foundation.

Phasing Out Smoking And Solid Fuel Use In China Could Avert 32 Million Deaths In Next 25 Years

Many millions of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and tuberculosis could be averted in China if smoking and biomass and coal fuel use in homes were phased out over the next 25 years. These are the conclusions of authors of an Article published early Online and in an upcoming edition of The Lancet. The three diseases above are three of the ten leading causes of death in China, where prevalences of smoking and solid fuel use are also high.

Second-Hand Smoke May Trigger Nicotine Dependence Symptoms In Kids

Parents who smoke cigarettes around their kids in cars and homes beware - second-hand smoke may trigger symptoms of nicotine dependence in children. The findings are published in the September edition of the journal Addictive Behaviors in a joint study from nine Canadian institutions.

British Lung Foundation Welcomes Images On Cigarette Packets

'These images are a stark reminder that we can't treat our lungs as if they were hoover bags able to filter out harmful substances like cigarette smoke' says Dame Helena Shovelton, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation. 'Smoking causes disabling lung diseases like COPD and kills more than 120,000 people in the UK each year. We hope these images will underline that more effectively than written messages.

Actor Paul Newman Dies Of Lung Cancer, Aged 83

Paul Newman has died of lung cancer at the age of 83. Newman, who used to be a heavy smoker until 30 years ago, had been receiving treatment for lung cancer when he was last seen a few months ago in a wheelchair coming out of the Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York. Newman's early film career was during a period when cigarette smoking in movies portrayed virility, sex appeal and sophistication. He once said he was amazed he had survived all that booze, smoking and car racing.

Shocking Pictures To Appear On Cigarette Packets In UK On 1st October

The UK's ten million Smokers may see pictures of rotting teeth, throat cancer, and indications of male impotence (erectile dysfunction) on cigarette packets they buy at the beginning of October. The Department of Health (DoH) says "The warnings illustrate the devastating effects that tobacco can have on health." Written warnings were introduced in January 2003. The DoH says they have been a great success.

Researchers Profile Teens Who Seek Help To Quit Smoking

Teen smokers who volunteer for programs to help them quit are more hooked on tobacco than other teens who smoke, new West Virginia University research has found. The teens believe quitting is a good idea, but they aren't fully confident they'll be able to kick the tobacco habit.
