Phase 3 Data Indicate Investigational 13-valent Vaccine May Broaden Protection Against Pneumoccocal Disease In Children Younger Than Two

Data from a pivotal trial and three other Phase 3 studies presented today indicate that Wyeth's (NYSE: WYE) investigational 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) may offer broader protection against pneumococcal disease (PD) in infants and young children compared to Prevnar(R), Pneumococcal 7-valent Conjugate Vaccine (Diphtheria CRM197 Protein).

Data Presented By MedImmune At AAP National Conference & Exhibition Demonstrating Burden Of RSV Disease

MedImmune has announced that it will present four abstracts at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2008 National Conference & Exhibition that add to the company's growing body of research into the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a leading cause of viral respiratory infection among preterm infants. Risk Factors Outside Of AAP Guidelines Identify More Preemies Needing RSV Prophylaxis

New data have emerged regarding three risk factors which may help pediatricians better identify which preterm infants are at high risk of severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease and may thus benefit from palivizumab (Synagis®) prophylaxis, investigators reported at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2008 National Conference and Exhibition. The risk factors include cigarette smoking, crowded living conditions, and young chronologic age.

Walgreens Informs Customers On New Children’s Dosing Directions For Over-the-Counter Cough And Cold Products

Walgreens (NYSE:WAG)(NASDAQ:WAG) will inform its customers about new dosing directions for certain children's over-the-counter cough and cold medicines through in-store shelf signage and consultations with pharmacists. The Consumer Health Products Association (CHPA) today said manufacturers are voluntarily implementing new children's dosing directions to indicate these products should not be taken by children under age 4.

Even Foetuses Are Harmed By Air Pollution

When a pregnant woman breathes polluted air, the foetus suffers too. So concludes a Swiss study, presented in Berlin at the Annual Congress of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), which shows for the first time that, when a mother to-be is exposed to pollution, her baby is also affected, and the newborn's breathing will reflect this impact. Exposing children to air pollution was known to impair their lung development at school age.

Orphan Genetic Disease Believed To Affect Ten Times More Children Than Previously Thought

Twenty-four European countries have just participated in the largest-ever epidemiological study on primary ciliary dyskinesia, led by a European Respiratory Society (ERS) Task Force. The figures announced at the 18th Congress indicate that this genetic disease could affect up to one in 3,000 children, ten times more than previously believed.

National Children’s Study Expanded To Bristol County By Brown University And Women & Infants Hospital

Brown University, with lead partner Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, has been awarded a $12-million, five-year contract to expand its participation in the National Children's Study, a groundbreaking research project aimed at improving child health. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), one of the 27 Institutes and Centers at the National Institutes of Health, announced the award today.

FDA Reviews OTC Cough And Cold Remedies For Kids

As part of a review of the rules on the use of over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medications for children, the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research is holding an all day meeting in Beltsville, Maryland, today, Thursday, to hear what the public has to say about them. Earlier this year the agency warned that OTC cough and cold medicines should not be given to children under 2 years of age.

In SIDS, Smoking During Pregnancy A ‘Double-Edged Sword’

Premature infants whose mothers smoked during pregnancy may be at even higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than preemies whose mothers did not smoke, according to new research out of the University of Calgary. In the first-ever experimental study to compare the breathing reflexes of preemies of smokers versus non-smokers, researchers found that babies whose mothers had smoked showed a number of signs of impaired respiratory function.

Risk Of SIDS Is Twice-Linked To Smoking During Pregnancy

In a first ever experimental study to compare breathing reflexes of preemies born to smokers with those born to non-smokers, researchers in Canada found that premature babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are likely to be at a higher risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) than premature infants whose mothers did not.
