Phase 2 Study Of IMC-1121B In First-Line Treatment Of Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Starts Patient Enrollment

ImClone Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ: IMCL), a global leader in the development and commercialization of novel antibodies to treat cancer, today announced that its disease-directed Phase 2 clinical trial of IMC-1121B in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin as first-line therapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has opened for patient enrollment. IMC-1121B is ImClone's proprietary fully human, IgG1 anti-vascular growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) monoclonal antibody.

Lung Cancer Rates Dropping But Hospitalization Rates Remain Constant, USA

Hospital admissions for lung cancer remained relatively stable - at roughly 150,000 a year between 1995 and 2006 - despite a steady decline in the number of Americans diagnosed with the disease, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Survey results released today show that the general population blames lung cancer patients for their diagnosis, confirming the stigma that patients reportedly feel. Findings also demonstrate a lack of public support for patients and a need for greater research for the number one cancer killer.

Study Showed Tarceva Improved Progression-Free Survival As A First-Line Maintenance Therapy For Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Genentech, Inc. (NYSE:DNA) and OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:OSIP) today announced that a global Phase III study (SATURN) met its primary endpoint and showed Tarceva® (erlotinib) significantly extended the time patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) lived without their cancer getting worse when given immediately following initial treatment with platinum-based chemotherapy, compared to placebo.

Pre-clinical studies presented at the 9th International Conference on Membrane Redox Systems in Wellington New Zealand this week demonstrate that Novogen's NV-128 (a novel mTOR inhibitor), when used in combination with the Marshall Edwards, Inc.'s Phase III anti-ovarian cancer drug, phenoxodiol, produces potent synergistic anti-cancer activity against non-small cell lung carcinoma cell lines (NSCLC).

#7725 YOUNGER PATIENTS WITH LUNG CANCER HAVE BETTER SURVIVAL Lung cancer in younger patients may exhibit distinct clinical features than lung cancer in older patients, including better survival rates at each disease stage. Researchers from Stanford Cancer Center in California compared disease characteristics and survival of lung cancer patients aged 15 to 39 years at diagnosis with patients aged 40 years or over at diagnosis.

Genentech, Inc. (NYSE:DNA) and OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:OSIP) today announced that a randomized Phase III study (BeTa Lung) evaluating Avastin® (bevacizumab) in combination with Tarceva® (erlotinib) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose disease had progressed following platinum-based chemotherapy did not meet its primary endpoint of improving overall survival compared to Tarceva in combination with placebo.

Millions Of Deaths Expected From The Burning Of Solid Fuel In Homes In China

If current levels of smoking and biomass and coal fuel use in homes continues, between 2003 and 2033 there will be an estimated 65 million deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 18 million deaths from lung cancer in China, accounting for 19% and 5% of all deaths in that country during this period.
