Lung Cancer - NICE Recommends Oral Tarceva(R) (erlotinib) As An Alternative To Intravenous Chemotherapy, UK

Today the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends Tarceva (erlotinib) as a clinically and cost-effective alternative to IV chemotherapy (i.e. docetaxel) for the 2nd line treatment of non-small cell lung cancer.2 This is the first new drug recommended in non-small cell lung cancer for seven years and will give patients access to an oral treatment for this devastating disease without many of the side effects associated with IV chemotherapy.

European Cancer Specialists Mandate For Change - Better Emotional Support And Resouces For Lung Cancer Patients

A coalition of European cancer specialists today called for major changes in the provision of emotional support for lung cancer patients. In conjunction with the International Psycho-Oncology Society, they issued a Mandate for Change, highlighting basic rights for patients in terms of their emotional wellbeing and quality of life. Lung cancer is Europe's most common cancer killer, claiming almost 1,000 lives every day.

But while pink ribbons trumpet Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October, little attention is paid to lung cancer in November, which is that disease's awareness month. Oral Gefitinib As Effective As Injected Docetaxel For Survival Of Patients With Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (Interest Study)

Gefitnib is as effective a second-line treatment as docetaxel for patients with non-small cell* lung cancer. The INTEREST study, published in an Article in this week's edition of The Lancet, thus establishes gefitinib as a valid treatment option for people with this condition. Extending Chemotherapy Improves Control Of Lung Cancer

A new Australian study has found that extending the use of chemotherapy in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer better controls the disease, as well as providing a modest improvement in survival. The study will be reported today (18/11) to the Clinical Oncolgoical Society of Australia Annual Scientific Meeting in Sydney.

Lung Cancer Rates Dropping But Hospitalization Rates Remain Constant, USA

Hospital admissions for lung cancer remained relatively stable - at roughly 150,000 a year between 1995 and 2006 - despite a steady decline in the number of Americans diagnosed with the disease, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
