Tick-Borne Disease Presents In China With Apparent Human Transmission

It appears that human ganulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) has been identified in China for the first time, and was transmitted between two humans rather than ticks, according to a study published on November 19, 2008 in JAMA. HGA, usually carried by ticks, and has symptoms similar to those of influenza. HGA has been noted in the United States since 1990 and Europe since 1997.

Hospital Infections Reduced By Friendly Bacteria

A probiotic bacterium, Lactobacillus plantarum 299, has been used to out-compete the dangerous bacteria that cause respiratory illness in ventilated patients. Research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Critical Care describes how applying a bacterial solution in place of normal antiseptics is effective in preventing the most common cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).

Patient With Inhalation Anthrax Is Treated, Homerton University Hospital, UK

A patient at Homerton Hospital has been confirmed as having inhalation anthrax. As the condition is not contagious, there is no risk to either other patients or staff. Tests carried out by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed the patient's condition on Friday evening. The patient is being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit and is said to be critical but stable. Anthrax is a disease cased by spores that live in the environment.

Innovative Global Health Research Funded By 2 Grants Of $100,000 To Weill Cornell Medical College

Weill Cornell Medical College has today that it has received two $100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grants will support innovative global health research projects: "Untimely Triggering of the Fusion Mechanism Used by Viruses for Entry: A New Antiviral Approach Using Engineered Microparticles," conducted by Dr. Anne Moscona, and "Senescent and Rejuvenated Mtb Subsets on Exit from Latency," conducted by Dr. Carl Nathan.

MedImmune Licenses Reverse Genetics Technology To Hungary’s Omninvest For Use In Influenza Vaccine Development And Production

MedImmune announced that it has licensed its proprietary reverse genetics intellectual property to Omninvest, a Hungarian research and manufacturing company, to support the development and construction of new vaccine strains to produce non-live human influenza vaccines. Reverse genetics is a method by which viruses such as influenza can be generated from segments of DNA.
