Older People Should Have The Flu Jab This Winter, Warn Experts - British Medical Journal

Despite recent doubts about its effectiveness, the influenza vaccine does give valuable protection against illness, hospital admission and death caused by influenza, and people over 65 should have the flu jab this winter, say experts on bmj.com today. Despite Warm Temperatures, Arizona Confirms First Flu Case Of The Season

Although Valley temperatures continue to loom into the mid 80's this week, the flu is right on schedule. Today, the Arizona Department of Health Services confirms the state's first case of influenza, officially kicking off the 2008-2009 flu season. The patient is an infant from Maricopa County who is now recovering at home. "We usually expect to see our first case by Thanksgiving, so this comes as no surprise," said Will Humble, ADHS Deputy Director.

Mothers See Flu As Serious Health Threat, But Often Don’t Get Their Families Vaccinated

While 78 percent of mothers in the United States consider influenza a severe and potentially life-threatening disease that can strike anyone, only half say it is likely their families will get vaccinated this season, according to a new survey from the American Lung Association.

GSK Major Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Efficacy Trial To Assess Superior Protection For Those At Risk Of Influenza

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced today that it has started a worldwide clinical efficacy trial to evaluate an innovative vaccine for the prevention of seasonal influenza. The trial is one of the largest influenza efficacy trials ever undertaken for seasonal flu. Over 43,000 volunteers are expected to be enrolled in the phase III clinical trial.

Delaware’s First Confirmed Influenza Case For 2008-2009

Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH) reports the state's first laboratory confirmed cases of influenza for the 2008-2009 flu season. A 6 year-old child from New Castle County was confirmed with type B influenza Oct. 31 by the Delaware Public Health Laboratory. A 26 year-old Wilmington resident has been confirmed with influenza, with test results on the strain pending. Of the 56 lab-confirmed cases of influenza nationwide since Sept.

Who Health Department workers in every county What There are drive-through clinics in many locations. See local residents receive their flu shots. Flu shots will be given at no charge for one day clinics, but those who are eligible for Medicaid and Medicare are asked to bring their ID cards, and state employees are asked to bring their insurance cards.

Flu Shot Protects Kids - Even During Years With A Bad Vaccine Match

Children who receive all recommended flu vaccine appear to be less likely to catch the respiratory virus that the CDC estimates hospitalizes 20,000 children every year. This is according to new research published in Pediatrics by the University of Rochester Medical Center. The study looked at children between 6 months (the youngest able to receive the vaccine) and 5 years old in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.
