Association Between Antibodies To Cockroach, Mouse Proteins And Asthma, Allergies Risk

A study released by researchers at the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health shows that developing antibodies to cockroach and mouse proteins is associated with a greater risk for wheeze, hay fever, and eczema in preschool urban children as young as three years of age.

Allergies May Prevent Some Cancers

There may be a silver -- and healthy -- lining to the miserable cloud of allergy symptoms: Sneezing, coughing, tearing and itching just may help prevent cancer -- particularly colon, skin, bladder, mouth, throat, uterus and cervix, lung and gastrointestinal tract cancer, according to a new Cornell study.

North Dakota State Health Department Cautions Residents About The Dangers Of Mold

In conjunction with Home Indoor Air Quality Month, the North Dakota Department of Health is cautioning residents about the dangers of mold in homes and other buildings. Concerns about mold growth should be addressed quickly in order to prevent illness, according to State Health Officer Terry Dwelle, M.D. Governor John Hoeven has proclaimed October 2008 as Home Indoor Air Quality Month to encourage North Dakotans to learn more about indoor air quality issues.

Look Out For Latex In Unexpected Places

Allergic reactions to latex happen commonly in medical settings, where rubber gloves are in abundant supply. But less-visible elements in other environments can also pose danger, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). "Consider that restaurant meals are frequently prepared by cooks wearing latex gloves. In schools, the cafeteria may be a threat, but there is also potential exposure to latex in school supplies," said Donald H.

Welsh Pharmacies To Provide Allergy Screening Services

Community pharmacies in Wales will, from February 2009, be able to offer an allergy screening service to members of the public. The initiative from Allergy UK in association with the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) will train pharmacists to provide advice and support for allergy sufferers in the principality.

Key Allergy Gene Discovered By Munich Researchers

Together with colleagues from the Department of Dermatology and Allergy and the Center for Allergy and Environment (ZAUM) of the Technische Universitat Munchen, scientists at the Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen have pinpointed a major gene for allergic diseases.
