Severe lung inflammation, which can cause acute lung injury in cases of sepsis and infection, is associated with the accumulation in the lung and surrounding blood vessels of fluid, cells, and cellular debris. The deposition of inflammatory exudates spreads rapidly and can soon involve the entire lung or both lungs.
